Radiant Barrier Tips and Tutorial

Start saving energy and lower your utility bills.

Radiant Barrier - what is is and how does it help me?

Radiant barriers are materials installed in commercial office buildings, hotels, apartment complexes and homes to reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss. This "barrier" of "super insulation" is a great way to reduce your property's heating and cooling bills.

The most popular Radiant barriers are a thin reflective material (such as aluminum). This reflects "heat" – the summer sun is reflected away to keep your house cool in the summer, and the buildings heat is reflected back to itself in the winter to dramatically reduce heat loss in cold conditions.

Here are the benefits of applying a radiant barrier to your new construction or existing building or home:

  • Block most of the radiant heat,
  • Lower attic temperatures
  • Reduce heat flow to living spaces
  • Extend the life of air conditioning units,
  • Increase the comfort level of a property
  • Lower monthly utility costs.

Radiant barriers work equally well in commercial construction, roof replacement, roof repair and residential roofing.

Attic Floor Radiant Barrier
A very simple way to take advantage of the energy savings you get from having a radiant barrier installed is to place the reflective radiant barrier on top of a building or home's attic insulation. This new reflective "attic floor" installs quickly

Attic Roof Radiant Barrier
Another way to protect your property from summer heat gain and winter hear loss is to place the radiant barrier on the underside of the roof's rafters. While this takes slightly more time to install, it keeps the heat from ever penetrating down into the attic itself.

Over Rafters Radiant Barrier

This kind of radiant barrier is the best for new construction, commercial applications or flat roofs. In this case the radiant barrier goes underneath the roof's shingles (or equivalent top layer) before heat even reaches the top of the attic.

Radiant Barrier House Wrap and "Heat Shield"

Radiant Barrier protection is not just for the roof or attic. It can be applied throughout a building or house to "wrap" it. This is the ultimate is energy bill reduction and is practical for new construction.

Radiant Barrier - think "Super Insulation"

Studies show that installing radiant barrier protection to your home of building is three times more powerful than adding extra insulation. Insulation SLOWS the outside temperatures down from reaching inside your property. Radiant barrier goes further to REFLECT heat outside in the Summer and inside in the Winter - not just slowing, but effectively blocking (reflecting) a large percentage the problem in the first place.
